We are officially one week into our final fieldwork season of the Hinterland of Medieval Chalkis Project! Our fieldwork began back in 2022 with both intensive and extensive surveys on the island of Euboea. This means that we are now entering our fourth year of collaboration with Leiden University, as well as with many international and local organisations, students, and specialists who will once again join us in this region.

This promises to be an intense and exciting season: the team will continue tasks left over from last year, complete the research of several archaeological sites, including excavations at previously surveyed sites, and start surveying an entirely new uphill site.

This year’s focus is not only on training students. Our team of international specialists will be working on complex excavations at locations where we previously carried out surveys and geophysical research. Throughout the year, an international team of researchers has been preparing for this fieldwork campaign, which will last the next four weeks.
